10/08/2016 Bicyclist Dies from Injuries Received in Traffic Crash

An investigation is continuing into a traffic crash that resulted in the death of a bicyclist early this morning.

The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. Friday.

The bicyclist, age 70, whose name is not being released pending family notification, was riding his bicycle on the edge of the road northbound on Ninth Avenue toward Ash Drive. A 2012 Ford Fusion driven by Kaitlynn Pemberton, 22, of Pensacola was also northbound on Ninth Avenue in the left-hand lane.

The bicyclist suddenly turned in front of Pemberton’s vehicle, collided with it and was thrown from the bicycle. The bike landed in a southbound lane of Ninth Avenue and was struck by a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by William Deakle, 26, of Pensacola, said Officer Richard Ghigliotty.

The bicyclist was wearing dark clothing and was not wearing a helmet. He was taken to a local hospital where he died just before 4 a.m. today, said Officer Jason Browning.
